What Size Art Goes Above a Bed? — Every Mattress Size

The short answer: choose art about two-thirds the width of the bed (the planner accepts half to four-fifths), and hang the bottom of the frame 8–12 inches above the headboard. Bedrooms are where a pair of prints shines: two matched portraits read as calm and symmetrical, and they line up naturally with the bedside tables.

Use the mattress width — or the headboard's, if it is noticeably wider. The presets use standard US mattress widths.

Sizes and prices come from the merchant's feed (spot-checked 15 October 2026); framed prices use the black frame, which costs the same as white, wood and dark wood. Every bed size, worked through

Assumes a 48-inch headboard and an 8-foot ceiling. At that height a 24 × 36 or 28 × 40 print hung 8 inches above the headboard would reach within 6 inches of the ceiling, so the table leaves them out — with a lower headboard or a higher ceiling, the planner above will include them. 5 × 7 prints are left out too: three of them read as shelf-sized over a bed.

How high above the headboard

Eight to twelve inches above the headboard keeps the art connected to the bed without crowding pillows. Above a bed, the 57–60-inch eye-level centre used in hallways usually sits too low; let the headboard set the line.

Calm subjects suit bedrooms

Bedroom walls are seen first thing and last thing, so subjects with low visual noise tend to wear best: leaves and stems from Botanical Calm, still water from Japanese Koi & Gardens, open landscapes. A pair in matching frames above the bed is the easiest win; a trio suits king beds.

Before you buy

Use two hanging points per frame above a bed — it keeps the frame level when the headboard knocks the wall.
